Jill Scott (n e Joyce Scott) was born to her mother on the 4th of April in 1972. She was also raised by her maternal grandmother, and was raised as a single child. Scott went to her school, the Philadelphia High School for Girls when she was a senior, and then she was accepted into Temple University. She took secondary school classes the course of two years while also working. She was hoping to become an high school English teacher. She had a dream of becoming a high-school English teacher, was cut short after she quit school. She started her career doing live performances of poems as well as her own work. Then she joined forces with Amir Quest Thompson, a musician in The Roots. They ended up collaborating as well as co-writing You Got Me. Her first public appearance was as a performer at the Roots Show. Afterward she secured collaborations with stars like Eric Benet Will Smith and Common. She was also able to learn about performing arts through the Broadway tour across Canada's musical Rent. She became the first signed artist on label Hidden Beach Recordings label.
